YALI RLC: My Experience (Day 9)

It was the 9th day of the training, the 2nd of October, 2017. It was a really wonderful day. Those who did physical exercise did so at 6, but everyone took breakfast at 7. The lecture room had more participants already seated than it used to have at 8; the change had begun! At 8:05, Mr Kappo came on stage and, as usual, talked 'to' us.

Stephen Otaro was our lecturer. He titled his lecture as "Africa and Global Technology Landscape". He talked about how digital technology impacts development through innovation, efficiency and inclusion. He allowed us research what disruptive technology is, and give examples. He also asked about areas we think disruptive technologies will dramatically alter in the future. Of course, our brilliant selves even gave him more than what he expected as replies. He asked, too, how technology will change the way we work?

Then, there was a short documentary he showed us before snacks-break. During the snacks-break, participants from Nigeria, Liberia and the Ivorians had their 'yearbook photo-shots' today, while The Sierra Leoneans, the Gambians and Togoleses will have theirs, too, tomorrow.

We came back and we discussed about emerging technologies; two documentaries were shown to support the discussion. However, we got ourselves a very long documentary; the longest yet. It was about how technology is transforming Israel. We went for lunch break, and still came back to continue with this documentary. It was really a fantastic documentary, but too long.

However, its purpose was not defeated as we, according to our groups, discussed some technological issues. Stephen gave us the process of entrepreneurship: deciding to become an entrepreneur, to developing successful business idea, to moving from an idea to an entrepreneurial firm, and finally to managing and growing the entrepreneurial firm. He ended his lecture with a TEDeX video of an African guy, who talked so much about how Africa can and will get 'things right' through the youths.

Mr. Kappo came again and talked. He talked about our internship or community service and mentor-ship. He invited Mr. Boye who elucidated more about the activities we would engage ourselves in, in the concluding weeks of this training. Mr. Kappo also talked again about our stipend, stating that not only would it be delivered to us on the very last day of the on-site training, but would be given to us in Nigerian currency.

We ended this day's session as early as 5pm; the earliest time ever. Some of us had time, enough to play football at Phase 2 'stadium'. Dinner was served at 6; it was 'Nigerian fried rice'!

End of Day 9!
